A CAUTION: Young Wild Lettuce looks very similar to dandelion. Later the lettuce grows up into a tall stalk anywhere from three to seven feet tall, while dandelion remains a rosette of leaves on the ground. It's easy to tell the difference. dandelion has soft leaves, while the lettuce leaves are coarser and have a spiny texture on the underside. Wild lettuce, sometimes called Opium lettuce has a very strong sedative effect when made into tea (fresh or dried). A tablespoon of dried leaves or one medium to large fresh leaf in six or eight ounces of water, steeped for ten minutes will have a very noticeable effect. Be careful with it, until you know how much you need/want. It's non-addictive and I take it as a natural anti-anxiety medication, instead of Valium. A few years back a group of Swiss hikers ate a whole potful and ended up in the hospital semi-comatose for six or eight hours, but they were not actually in danger. Dandelions are wonderful! Back before there were year round food sources, People would look out for dandelions in the spring because they were one of the first green vegetables to come up in the spring and, by then, pretty much everybody had vitamin deficiencies. The flowers also make delicious wine that is well worth the trouble if you can get enough flowers.

Additionally: 1) Sage - leaf tea is good for combatting sore throat, but the measure needs to be mild 2) Carroway - strong seed tea helps with gasiness after a bad meal 3) Anise - seed tea helps with mild stomach unease 4) Wormwood - leaf tea helps with stronger stomach pains than anise, but tastes worse 5) Clove - chew dry seeds for throat inflamation or toothache (btw, this was already available in Europe during medieval times through Arabian traders) 6) Lady's mantle - leaf tea helps, as name suggest, with period pains (a teeny tiny bit)

Warning about peppermint oil: it's a "drying oil" that heats up as it polymerizes, so if you get it on cloth, paper, rags, or whatever, make sure it is in an open, non-flammable container until it is completely dry. Chucking it into a garbage can cause a fire.

13:54 i have this image now of lots people who probably live, not in the great out doors, but in the a city or suburb's. And there all going out and picking the first dandelion that they find too eat it... in perhaps blissful ignorance of haw much dog piss its been soaked in. Be carful boys and girls. Try picking Dandelion, and everything ells, from the middle of the felids, not in lanes or on the side of roads. Not unless you have not other option and are going to wash the stuff. Not a bad idea to wash everything anyway. Best of luck too all.

Great video! Though I do have one minor bit of pedantry to offer... At 10:13 you say of Yarrow that it helps you sweat (which is true), which "removes toxins from the body". This isn't true. Sweat's purpose is cooling, not filtration. The removal of toxins is done by your liver and other glands, not your sweat.

About Plantain: Especially the more pointy type, plantago lanceolata is amazing with insect stings, as well as nettle stings. Also, when you have a cold with an hurting throat, it is quite helpful, as it continues mucilage. I am really fond of this plant. However, I feel like it should be said, that if you go on an adventure, while it is great to be able to use plants effectively, you should probably have some "real" medicine with you, as well as other things to treat wounds. While plants can do amazing things, pure active medical ingredients formulated as drugs, in case of emergency are usually more effective and faster. Tldr: use common sense and be aware that modern medicine is, in case of emergency, probably a safer bet. Better to break character than to suffer longer consequences.

    • @hendrikm9569
      @hendrikm9569 23 часа назад

Also: Plantago lanceolata, as well as plantago major, I think thats the one you showed in the video, is also native to europe. According to the german Wikipedia article, the plant also appears in romeo and juliette, and the german name Wegerich comes from old german (Althochdeutsch), which was spoken between 750 - 1050 ce. So I'd say, having plantains in medieval fantasy is certainly historically plausible. By the way, if anyone cares: Plantago lanceolata is Spitzwegerich - pointy plantain in german and plantago major is Breitwegerich - broad plantain.

Dandelion leaves contain a high amount of potassium, which balances their function as a powerful diuretic. The root functions differently, being used to treat the liver to improve its function, and as a mild laxative. Both leaf and root act as a tonic to the gallbladder. Its detoxifying properties remove the effects of pollution on the body. In women who are breastfeeding, it is used to promote lactation. Also used to boost appetite. Several beekeepers I know encourage plantain to grow near their hives as a chewed-up leaf is a good poultice for random bee stings and bug bites. Another 'you can eat pretty much every part of it except the seed head after it flowers' plant is the cattail. Roots can be treated like potatoes, (including making them into starch flour), the inner non-woody parts of the leaves (especially the young leaves) are salad greens, the core of the immature seedheads can be eaten like those 'baby corn' bits in stir fry and soups, and the pollen makes a decent cornmeal substitute. The only concern is to be sure that the water the cattail plant grows in is reasonably clean. Both North American varieties and the European variety, while not medicinal, are very useful food sources.

Viking-age center gripped shields aren suited for the static method of fighting required by the stereotypical overlapping shieldwall. They are very much meant to be used actively in the defense, and this is where the centre grip shines as it allows the wielder of the shield to use it more flexibly.

I think you are mixing up plantains. Ghr pot herb is unrelated to the banana-like plant. Also, yes, plantain was in Europe during the Middle Ages. Heck, I know of a specific historical magical item that specifically calls for it (namely, talismans for the fixed star Arcturus).

This is such great information! My husband and I are micro urban farmers and I will need to add yarrow to my herb garden as this just solidified what I have heard about it. And yes, dandelion salad and tea is rather good! Plus you tied it back to adventuring which makes it all the better! It would be cool to see how the different avenues are made and stored such as tinctures versus oil infused versus topical? (if that makes sense).

Plantain weed is actually native to Europe and parts of Asia. It's seeds are sticky and that's how it got so widely spread - everywhere humans go, plantain comes with them on the soles of their shoes. That is likely how it got to America, the locals even used to call it "white man's footprint". Here in Ukraine we call it подорожник, which means something like "co-traveller" or "travel companion". I remember when I was a kid we used to treat our scratches and other minor injuries right on the spot, by grabbing a few plantain leaves, crupmling them thouroughly, adding some spit (i doubt this particular step is sanitary) and putting it on the wound.

its no coincidence you arrive at this weird combination of medival and 18th century in fantasy because those are the two time periods tolkien took the most inspiration from. that would be european legends and fairy tales. our first written sources for the nordic mythology, arthus, beowulf or niebelungenlied all date to the middle to late medival period, while fairy tales were written down at the beginning of the 19th century, prominently by the brothers grimm. this explains quite well why "fantasy" combines medival elements with 18th century. i guess another aspect keeping this kinda weird amalgamation alive is the fact the medival times have a very strong appeal with their knights and castles, but are also lacking in sources on so many things. the first known european medival cookbook is from 1350! so people use more modern sources while pretending they apply to the times of the crusades. the cut-off for this seems to be industrialisation, as you have alluded too.

For plantain, from my copy of culpepper's herbal..... PLANTAIN Description. The root of the common great plantain is thick at the head, having many whitish fibres growing from it. The leaves are pretty broad, large and oval, somewhat waved about the edges, and having seven large nerves running through the whole length of the leaves, and even the broad hollow foot-stalks into the root. The flowers grow in long spikes, above half the length of the thick foot-stalks, being small and staminous, cut into four parts, which are succeeded by two small oblong shining brown seeds, hollowed in on the one side, growing in little roundish capsulæ, which open horizontally when the side is ripe. Place. It grows every where by the way-side. Time. It flowers in May. The whole plant is used. Government and virtues. It is true, Misaldus and others, yea, almost all astrology-physicians, hold this to be an herb of Mars, because it cures the diseases of the head and privities, which are under the houses of Mars, Aries, and Scorpio. The truth is, it is under the command of Venus, and cures the head by antipathy to Mars, and the privities by sympathy to Venus; neither is there hardly a martial disease but it cures. The juice of Plantain clarified and drank for divers days together, either of itself, or in other drink, prevails wonderfully against all torments or excoriations in the intestines or bowels, helps the distillations of rheum from the head, and stays all manner of fluxes, even women's courses, when they flow too abundantly. It is good to stay spitting of blood and other bleedings at the mouth, or the making of foul and bloody water, by reason of any ulcers in the reins or bladder, and also stays the too free bleeding of wounds. It is held an especial remedy for those that are troubled with the phthisic, or consumption of the lungs, or ulcers of the lungs, or coughs that come of heat. The decoction or powder of the roots or seeds, is much more binding for all the purposes aforesaid than the leaves. Dioscorides saith, that three roots boiled in wine and taken, helps the tertian agues, and for the quartan agues, (but letting the number pass as fabulous) I conceive the decoction of divers roots may be effectual. The herb (but especially the seed) is held to be profitable against the dropsy, the falling-sickness, the yellow jaundice, and stoppings of the liver and reins. The roots of Plantain, and Pellitory of Spain, beaten into powder, and put into the hollow teeth, takes away the pains of them. The clarified juice, or distilled water, dropped into the eyes, cools the inflammations in them, and takes away the pain and web; and dropped into the ears, eases the pains in them, and heals and removes the heat. The same also with the juice of Houseleek is profitable against any inflammations and breakings out of the skin, and against burnings and scaldings by fire and water. The juice or decoction made either of itself, or other things of the like nature, is of much use and good effect for old and hollow ulcers that are hard to be cured, and for cankers and sores in the mouth or privy parts of man or woman; and helps also the pains of the piles in the fundament. The juice mixed with oil of roses, and the temples and forehead anointed therewith, eases the pains of the head proceeding from heat, and helps lunatic and frantic persons very much; as also the biting of serpents, or a mad dog. The same also is profitably applied to all hot gouts in the feet or hands, especially in the beginning. It is also good to be applied where any bone is out of joint, to hinder inflammations, swellings, and pains that presently rise thereupon. The powder of the dried leaves taken in drink, kills worms of the belly; and boiled in wine, kills worms that breed in old and foul ulcers. One part of Plantain water, and two parts of the brine of powdered beef, boiled together and clarified, is a most sure remedy to heal all spreading scabs or itch in the head and body, all manner of tetters, ring-worms, the shingles, and all other running and fretting sores. Briefly, the Plantains are singularly good wound herbs, to heal fresh or old wounds or sores, either inward or outward.

This is such an awesome video. I'd also like to mention sweet woodruff (galium odoratum) as a possible analogue to aethelas - its folk name is "master of the woods," it has white star-like flowers and long lance-shaped leaves; it can be found by its strong wholesome scent (between mown hay and vanilla, which only increases when dried), and it was used to help cure consumption, insomnia, and as a restorative and air-purifier. In the Middle Ages, the leaves were also bruised and applied to cuts and wounds to encourage healing. I love this plant, though you do have to be careful when drying it, as it can apparently be dangerous if it gets moldy.

Plantain (or Wegerich in German) was the first plant that my grandma showed me to be medicinal. She used to tell me that, when I cut myself in the garden, I can just rub a leave between my hands and use it as a bandage. As far as I know that is fairly common knowledge here in germany at least among the more elderly folk. Younger people tend to not care too much when medicine is readily available :D Edit: Forgot to mention that Wegerich/Plantain is very very common here in Germany!

Ive always wanted to improve my knowledge in general on herbal remedies you never know when youll need that knowledge. Plus if you are good at recognizing said herbs you can forage and use it in various cooking and teas and when you need some relief when you arnt near medical supplies. EDIT: You can also make a jam with Dandelion

Nettles are a sorely underrated weed for eating; get them in Spring, boil them in salted water, let them dry a bit and chuck them in a salad with Dandelion and Wild Garlic or use them in a soup or dry the leaves fully and take as a tea. Apparently excellent for anaemia too. Mandatory mention of Dandelion and Burdock as a drink.

Not medicinal in part, but the ribwort plantain flower heads are edible and taste like fresh (uncooked) mushrooms, and can be turned into a flour: good as an emergency adventure grain. Dandelion roasted root is a well known coffee alternative. I always recommend stinging nettles and cleavers both as food and as medicine: stinging nettles are really good for hay fever and both are good for scurvy. (Had to learn the extra stuff because I'm allergic to the daisy family.)

I say as though I haven't eaten daisy heads because they're also edible and taste nice. Tart.

Fandabidozi would be proud of you. 👍 Knowing the properties of plants and herbs should common knowledge. Nettle tea for stomach ache, ginger tea for stomach flu, willow tea for headache, chamomile tea to ease nerves, cayenne on wounds to staunch bleeding. I'll have natural medicine whenever possible, no added chemical ingredients just so big pharma could patent it.

Dandelions have a use you didn't mention. Dandelion wine is pretty good. 5 gallons of dandelions per gallon of finished wine. 10 is better. Just sayin'.

Plantain came from Europe. In fact Native Americans were very suspicious about using plantain because of this. Europeans brought Plantain over to the Americans because of it's usefulness just as they brought dandelions over. By the way you for got to mention that you can use the flowers to make Dandelion wine which is very good.
